About Us

Yick Wo Elementary is dedicated to fostering a love for learning by supporting each child’s social, emotional, intellectual, artistic, and physical growth.

Our mission is to nurture good citizenship and empathy while encouraging students to embody the values of safety, kindness, and responsibility.

A Brief History

Located in the heart of San Francisco’s North Beach, Chinatown, and Russian Hill neighborhoods, Yick Wo Elementary has served as a vital part of the community since 1984.

Named for the landmark Yick Wo v. Hopkins Supreme Court case, which addressed discriminatory practices against Chinese-owned businesses, the school upholds principles of equality and inclusion as a core part of its identity.

National Blue Ribbon School

In 2020, Yick Wo received the prestigious National Blue Ribbon Award for academic excellence.

This honor reflects our commitment to providing high-quality education for all students and closing achievement gaps.

Community-Driven Programs

Our PTO plays an essential role in supporting unique programs that enrich our students’ learning experiences, from outdoor education to art and performing arts.

These programs are designed to inspire creativity, teamwork, and real-world connections beyond the classroom.

A Welcoming Environment

At Yick Wo, our small campus fosters close relationships among teachers, staff, students, and parents, creating a warm, inclusive community where every student can thrive.
